AT THE UTICA GARDEN: Gardening events for the whole family


SoilSHOP: ONE STOP for all your gardening questions

  • Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and New York State Department of Health’s Brownfield Land Re-Use Project
  • Bring your yard or garden soil in a one quart baggie for testing:
 Free garden or yard soil for screening for heavy metals, lead, for local residents
- Experts on hand to check the soil for lead on site
- Provide soil screening results, education and guidance on how this impacts direct  soil planting in your garden or whenever you should consider building raised bed  gardens
  • RAFFLE: 60 gallon compost bin and more- bring your soil sample to the soilSHOP and receive a free raffle ticket

  • Cornell Cooperative Extension 
- Free soil pH testing and education on improving your garden soil, general  gardening expertise
  • Oneida Herkimer Solid Waste Authority 
- Composting demonstrations and composting experts on hand to answer your questions

  • HOPS and Fermentation Presentations
  • Steve Miller, Cornell Cooperative Extension
- The history of HOPS in Centeral New York
- Hillary Jo Pitoniak 1/2 hour presentation followed by 1/2 hour Q & A session on Fermentation and Beer

  • Cornell Cooperative Extension Mater Gardener
- Will offer advice on gardening with children and discuss the Thea Bowman Children’s Garden Program

  • Utica Library
  • Children’s gardening programming in the library adjacent to the garden
  • Movie Premiere: “Utica Community Garden”, short film by award willing filmmaker Bhawin Suchak, filmed in Utica, at Children’s Garden, in the summer of 2014, including a director’s talk
  • Dedication of Children’s Peace Pole in the Children’s Garden
  • Refugee Art Project for the Children’s Garden
Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees:
  • Gardening demonstrations including using raised bed gardening, using hoops for extending the growing season, and growing micro-greens pilot project
  • Healthy Eating Events:
- Slow Foods Mohawk Valley -offering soup samples, live food demos
  • Eat Smart NY
- What services are available through EAT SMART NY
- Two live food demonstrations offering healthy snacking
  • WIC-Women, Infant’s, and Children’s Program:
- Services available through WIC, nutrition education

  • Utica Zoomobile
- 1-2 presentations, 2-3 petting zoo time and questions

- Preventing lead poisoning in children and adults

- Scheduling your free home inspection (City of Utica Cornhill & West Utica only)
- Staff can look up your child’s blood lead levels on site

- Learn about healthy housing principles and how to keep your house safe from fire, carbon monoxide, radon, mold, pests

- How to protect yourself from Rabies exposure

  • 5/8 Utica Unity Garden South Gazebo Ribbon Cutting 10 AM, reception to follow at the Utica Library, Mele Company Employees and Utica Public Library will be honored. Local, state, and federal officials invited.
